Tree Sustainability

Hey! So in school, we are learning about tree sustainability. Here is the story of  Smokey Bear!

Once upon a time there was a bear cub that lives in a lush forest. A human came along and left their campfire lit. It caused a forest fire and many animals were hurt. Fire fighters found the cub burnt up. They brought it home. Veterans cared for the cub and his burns. They named him Smokey because he survived the forest fire.

Here are 10 facts about trees!

  • An average size tree produces enough oxygen in one year to keep a family of four breathing.
  • Three trees planted in the right place around buildings can cut air-conditioning costs up to 50 percent.
  • Trees increase the value of property. Houses surrounded by trees sell for 18-25 percent higher than houses with no trees.
  • Trees generate jobs and contribute raw materials for buildings, newspapers, books and more than 15,000 other forest products. Trees are renewable, biodegradable and recyclable. Wood by-products become such products as vitamins, plastics, vanilla flavoring, photographic film, toothpaste and medicines.
  • By planting 20 million trees, the earth and its people will be provided with 260 million more tons of oxygen. Those same 20 million trees will remove 10 million tons of CO2.
  • Trees provide shelter and food for wildlife such as birds, squirrels, and bugs. Groves of trees provide food and cover for larger mammals, such as raccoons and deer.
  • Trees make people feel good. Workers are more productive when they see trees along their commute routes and from their office windows.
  • Hospital patients who have a view of trees heal faster, use fewer pain medications, and leave the hospital sooner than patients with a view of a brick wall. Patients with a view of trees spend 8 percent fewer days in the hospital.
  • Consumers are willing to spend more money in shopping districts with trees. They are willing to pay more for products purchased in a shopping district with trees. Those same shoppers also say they are willing to stay longer and rate the products and stores as higher quality in a shopping district with the trees.
  • Trees in the landscape relax us, lower heart rates, and reduce stress.

I made this poster to prove that trees matter. Here it is:

Sorry about the white out!

By the way, this might be my last post! I don’t know if I can use this once I move.

My tree

Hey! In school a few months ago we picked a tree and wrote a poem about them. My tree was pointy and bare in March, but now it has a ton of leaves! It also looks like it had some flowers in the spring. We are reading a new book in Language Arts, and it is called Wishtree. A big thing in this book is names, so I will be talking about them. My name is Harrison, and it means a couple different things. In Pennsylvania, it means gift of god. In Korean origin, it also means gift of god. In English origin, it means incredibly handsome. In Michigan, it means “awesome”. In New York, it means “lover of many”. In Virginia, it means son of Harris. I am naming my tree Tricky because it looks so dead in the winter, but so alive in the spring and summer. The tree is optimist because when it looked dead, it new that it had a future, and now it has a ton of leaves.  The bird in the photo I am naming Difficult because it didn’t want to get it’s picture taken. Here is an imaginary dialogue between them:

Tricky: Difficult, did you see that kid? Was he taking pictures of us?!

Difficult: Yes, he was.

Tricky: What will we do?

Difficult: Get revenge.

Tricky: What’s our game plan?

Difficult: I go bang on the window and then you will start making weird noises.

Tricky: Ok, let’s do it!

Here is my tree!

Tree Book!

Hey! In school we did these tree books. They are really cool! First, we screen printed onto painted mat board and made them look super cool! They turned into the covers of the book. We also cut the covers to make them look like they have branches. Next, we folded the “pages” of the book. After that, we used brayers and jelly plates to make akua ink plant patterns. We printed on dictionary pages and maps. With those akua ink prints, we made collages. We made them look like nature and trees. We also added little coin envelopes to hold our pieces of writing.

There was a teacher that helped us with this. Her name is   Ms. Gignoux. She is a professional artist and she is really good. Here is a link to her website! https://gignouxart.com/

We also did some pieces of writing. We did one that was our hopes and dreams, one that was about when this is all over, (COVID) and one about how I appreciate certain people in my life.

Here are some photos!

These are the pieces of writing! I hope you like them.

Inspiration: When This Is Over

by Harrison Atwater

When this is over,

May I never again take for granted

A normal baseball game

A friend over at my house

A new movie in the movie theater

Camping at a campground

A full classroom

Lunch inside

Sports with contact

Dinner Parties

Vacations without fear

Not wearing a masks

Seeing people’s faces

Being with family

Life as we knew it.

When this ends

We will keep

Carefulness

Being calm

Wanting alone time

Online calls instead of face to face meetings

Being with in house family

Assignments electronically

Non-electronic activities

Book reading

Memories.

My Wish Tree

By: Harrison Atwater

My life list is: One to get into a good college so I can be smart and have a successful career. Two to get a good job so I can have money and not have to worry about financial stuff. Three to get a cool car so I can look cool and I can zoom around. Four to travel the world so I can see all the different places and cultures around the world. Five to find what I really want to do so I can be happy and like my job. Six to invent something so I can get money and fame. Seven to help handicapped kids so they have a better life and have fun. Eight to donate money to charity so I can help people that are struggling and not having a good time in life. Nine to get the COVID vaccine so I am safe and other people are too. Ten to get famous so I can be rich and have a good life. 😎

For the world I hope that we all get the vaccine, we colonize Mars, we end all of these other countries being mean to us and other countries, no more hungry people, and no more homeless people.

SALUTE TO MY ROOTS!

By Harrison Atwater

My brother has had a big impact on my life. He is always there to give me a good laugh. He also always knows when to do the right thing. He is really good at being responsible and he is smart. He always wants to play with me and he is sometimes willing to do what I want to do. Thanks Bennett for being a great brother.

My Mom has a big impact on me because she helps me learn and have a good life. She won’t take no for an answer and expects me to get good grades. She has confidence in me to do the right thing and it is obvious, in everything she does and says that she loves me very much. She is also managing a lot of responsibility right now with my dad being in Virginia half the week. Thanks Mom for all you do for our family and me.

My Dad has been a big impact on me because he is always there for me and will do a lot to make me happy. My dad loves to be with his family and he loves us all very much. He is also juggling a lot of things because he can’t see us in full person when he is in Virginia. He also just got a new job and is working late into the night so he can be with us more on Fridays and Weekends. Thanks Dad for all you do to support our family.

Mr. Wilson has also had a big impact onn my life because he is always there for a laugh, but knows that he should be serious. He helps me learn and I now enjoy Math class very much. I feel like he is the right teacher for me and he would be there for me if I ever  needed his help. He is always willing to jump on a call to help me with some Math problems and he obviously enjoys being here at school very much. Thanks Mr. Wilson for being a great teacher!

I overall think that this was a great project to figure out what I appreciate and want in life. It was very wholesome and I worked hard on it.

Brain Twister

Hi! A kid at my school told this phrase that makes you think a lot.  “If you back in time and kill your grandpa before your Dad/Mom was born, you wouldn’t exist to go back in time to kill you grandpa. Think about that for a second.

Confusing, right?

My Fingerprints!!

Hey! So in school we did this assignment that we used a pencil and tape to find what our fingerprints are. Here are mine (don’t stalk me).

Here are a few facts about fingerprints!!

  • There are 3 types of base fingerprints.
  • Koalas also have fingerprints.
  • The rarest type of fingerprint is the “accidental”.
  • The scientific name for fingerprints is dermatoglyph.
  • Identical Twins have different fingerprints.
  • Some people are born without fingerprints
  • British police once ordered everyone to turn in their fingerprints.
  • Fingerprints can be preserved for thousands of years.

Stock Market Game

Hey! In school we are doing this Stock Market Game. We have to invest in real companies, check out stocks, and see how much money we have lost or gained! We get $20,000 to spend on the stocks. Don’t worry, though. It’s all fake. We are doing this because in the book Westing Game, a girl in the book is obsessed with about stocks, so we are doing this so we can understand them, but also because it is a good skill to know how to work them. I did this with two other people in my class, whose names are Evan and Ethan, and you should be able to go to their blogs off this one.

This is my spreadsheet:

On my spreadsheet, you can see all the companies that my group and I invested in.  We invested in Disney because after the virus is taken care of, Disney is going to become super popular again, and also because of Disney+ being so popular. We invested in Sony because of the new PlayStation 5, which is really popular so far. We invested in Amazon because of everyone doing online shopping these days.  We invested in Tesla because of them being electric, and we believe they will become super popular in the next few years. We invested in GameStop because of what happened a few weeks ago, and it is still going up. We invested in MediPharm because of it being  cheap and we had to fill up out $20,000, but we also think that because of it being pharmaceutical, it will go up after they start giving vaccines.

Lady and the Tiger ending

Hey! In school, we read a story called lady or the tiger. If you want to read it, here you go!

https://www.britannica.com/video/85389/story-Frank-Stockton-place-fate-princess-lover-

Anyway, in the story, the author doesn’t finish the story. So, my class made our own! This is mine.

Suddenly, it started to rain. There was a loud yell, and suddenly, it smelled awful. No one really cared, though. The man opened the right door, finding a blue tiger laying on it’s side, with green goo oozing out of its body. The only explanation for this is that the tiger was actually an alien spy, and he was extremely allergic to water. This also caused his cover to be blown. The alien mothership must’ve known that their spy had fallen, because a giant UFO was landing in the middle of the coliseum, crushing the man and the royal seats, killing them all. Everyone else runs away, while aliens are coming out of the mothership, holding up laser blasters at citizens and beginning their complete takeover of earth. The end

We also made doors, like the accused opens in the original story (you should read it). Inside of each door was a  lady or tiger. Here are my doors!

Have a good day!

Minecraft Caves and Cliffs Update

Hey! Many of you may know that Minecraft is having a knew update.   It will have new caves, a new ore called amethyst, lighting rods, copper ore, a couple new cave types which in one of them is a new block called stalagmites,  a new hostile mob called the Warden, goats, a new pet I don’t know the name of, a spyglass, and a couple other things. The thing is, Mojang wanted the update to come out in late 2020, but guess what messed that up. Yup, the problem that is wrecking everything, COVID-19.

Anyway, the new update is going to be pretty cool, but the update I want is for the End. I was kind of surprised when I heard that they were doing a caves and cliffs update, because they had just done one for the nether, so I thought the end would come right after that. But no, we are stuck with the same boring End.

Rocket League Game

Hey! Rocket League is a video game that you play car soccer in! Who wouldn’t want that? Get it at your PC/Console  store for free!

Rocket League. A game of try hard. Rocket League is a games based on cars playing soccer, but there are other modes, too! There’s hockey, basketball, and more! There is online and offline gameplay, so if you aren’t aloud to play online games (ME) then this is a game for you! I actually don’t really like it, though. To me it’s boring and the same thing happens over and over and over again. But, if you like that kind of thing, then this is for you!!!

There is also game modes like heat seeker, practice, season, expedition, and there is loads of different maps to play at (farmstead, champions field, Beckwith Park, and more).  There is also  TONS of skins to equip and you can make yourself look cool.

Bye!!!
